Privacy Policy

Blackwater Outdoor Journeys LLC ("we," "us," "our") operates campingwildernessskills.com, the Camping Wilderness Skills training library, and the CWS trip-planning app. This page explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, and who we share it with.

Two important boundaries. Our community itself runs on Skool, a third-party platform, and your membership account, posts, and payments are handled under Skool's own privacy policy and terms. And Blackwater Outdoor Journeys, our films and river-guide site, has its own privacy policy covering that site and its store.

Information we collect

• This marketing site — you can read every page here, including the free lessons, without giving us anything. We don't require a signup to browse.
• Email you send us — if you write to us, we receive your email address, your name if you give it, and whatever is in your message.
• Membership — when you join THE CAMPFIRE or subscribe to Premium, your account and payment details are collected and processed by Skool, not by us. We see the member information Skool shows a community owner: your display name, join date, and activity in the community.
• The CWS app — the app stores the trips you create, including routes, put-in and takeout points, dates, gear checklists, and any crew or emergency-contact details you choose to enter. If you turn on GPS tracking, it records your location while a trip is active so it can show your position on the map and log your route.

Location data in the app

Location is the most sensitive thing the app touches, so to be plain about it: your location is used to show where you are on the map, to log the route of an active trip, to pull weather and river-gauge data for your coordinates, and to power the check-in feature. It is tied to your account so your own trips are there when you come back.

We do not sell your location data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers. There are no advertising SDKs in the app. You can use the app without turning on live tracking; the trip planner, maps, weather, and gauges all work without it.

How we use it

• To run your membership and give you access to the courses, the Field Manual, and the app.
• To build and store your trip plans, and to show maps, weather, and river conditions for them.
• To answer questions you send us.
• To send occasional updates about CWS if you have asked to hear from us. You can unsubscribe from any of it at any time.

We don't sell your information to anyone.

Who we share it with

We use a small number of outside services to run CWS. Each receives only what it needs:

• Skool — hosts the community, the classroom, and membership billing. Your account and payment information live with Skool under their privacy policy.
• Cloudflare — hosts this site and provides basic, cookie-free traffic analytics (page counts, not individual tracking).
• Mapping, weather, and gauge providers — the app requests map tiles, forecasts, and USGS streamflow data for the coordinates of your trip so it can show current conditions.
• AI Coach — when you ask the Coach a question, the details of that trip and your question are sent to an AI provider to generate the answer. It is not used to build an advertising profile of you.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect someone's safety.

Cookies and tracking

This marketing site does not use tracking cookies and does not run advertising pixels. Skool and the app set the cookies or local storage they need to keep you signed in.

Your choices

You can cancel your membership at any time through Skool. You can turn off location permission for the app in your device or browser settings, and you can delete individual trips from within the app. To ask what information we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it deleted, email [email protected] and we will take care of it.

Children's privacy

CWS is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them. Families are welcome in the community, but the membership account should belong to an adult.

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a meaningful way, we'll update the date at the top of this page.
